While many health issues appear unpredictable, nutrition is fully within our control and plays a critical influence on longevity. Even minor changes in our eating habits can have a significant impact on our longevity.
Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow, Blue Zones LLC founder, and author of The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100, has examined the everyday behaviors of people who live in blue zones, where people live approximately a decade longer than the average (think, Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; and Ikaria, Greece).
Based on his research, here are five foods that can help you live longer if you eat them as part of a "blue zone" diet:
1. Nuts and seeds: These are high in healthy fats, fiber, and protein, and are a staple in many blue zone diets.
2. Beans and legumes: These are a good source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants, and are a staple in many blue zone diets.
3. Whole grains: Whole grains, such as brown rice and quinoa, provide important nutrients and help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
4. Leafy greens: Leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are packed with vitamins and minerals and are important for maintaining good health.
5. Fruits: Fruits, especially berries and grapes, are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
